In South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, England and the U.S.A, there are professionals called Biokineticists, therapy specialists, exercise specialists, rehabilitative kinesiologists. These terms describe the same profession. This professional, through specified exercises and assessments will determine the cause of the problem and not only deal with the symptoms. Once the cause has been identified the specialist will then execute specific exercise to alleviate the biomechanical cause. The therapy will not only look at the affected joint or muscles but will ensure that the body begins to function in the holistic manner as it is designed to do.

The difference and the success in countries like England, Australia, America and South Africa is the fact that they have these specialist who “fill in the gap” in therapy. It must be seriously noted that a personal trainer does not fall in this category. The current university education in Switzerland does not cover this section even though it is a serious downfall in the current allied medical system.

Many individuals have been for therapy for at least one musculo-skeletal problem which usually returns sometime after therapy. In most cases individuals become demotivated at the fact that the injury or pain has not subsided. They believe that this is their fate and that they have to live with the pain. Generally musculo-skeletal injuries or general muscular pain is as a result of muscle imbalances. These muscular imbalances change your biomechanics and movement patterns which result in excessive stress in certain bony and soft tissue structures. The current techniques are about symptom relief and not only about causal eradication.

Through specified exercises and assessments we will determine the cause of the musculo-skeletal problem and not only deal with the symptoms. Once the cause has been identified we will then execute specific exercises to alleviate the biomechanical cause. The therapy will not only look at the affected joint or muscles but will ensure that the body begins to function in the holistic manner as it is designed to do.

A large majority of people train at fitness centres, some for years without really seeing long term effective results. Most training programmes would recommend the use of machines. Dr. Siff and Dr. Verkhoshansky (Supertraining, 2003), leading experts in fitness training have stated that strength training on machines restrict the movement of joints, affect the circuitry and programming of the brain negatively, and reduce functional capabilities of muscles to execute movement effectively. This poor exercise prescription and the lack of professional scientific supervision would in part result in individuals sustaining some sort of orthopaedic imbalance.

The human body is an intricate system that is designed for movement. As a result correct movement of the body brings these intricate systems into a positive efficient balance. Each person requires different stimulus and motivation to attain this balance. This would imply that each persons exercise needs are individualized and can not be attained by a generalized exercise prescription.

An in depth knowledge of physiology and human anatomy is vital in helping individuals attain their full physical potential which can be sustained long term and with minimal time.

In terms of sport, it amazes me at the potential that Switzerland and specifically the German speaking areas have. The unfortunate scenario is that it is untapped. The personal training and specialized training is exclusively for those who can afford it. This means that Switzerland is not manipulating the full potential of its athletic population.

The general fitness preparation of athletes is poor, with coaches perceiving that the sport by itself will develop the players. This is a non scientific, out dated perception that is the main cause of no improvement in the sport status in Switzerland.

The principles used by coaches and self proclaimed fitness trainers are shockingly outdated and is reflected in the performances of teams.
The training techniques that are used by us are the most recent, effective methods, which are backed by scientific research and are yet to be introduced in Switzerland.
